I had mini cupcakes from a small storefront in SoHo called Baked by Melissa last time we were visiting NYC. The cupcake craze is everywhere, but this concept was a little different so I thought I’d get in the massive line and try some. I can’t say they tasted that great though. The stuff my friend Krissy bakes is WAY better. Anyhoo, Melissa is making a killing – charging about $1 each for cupcakes the size of a quarter!

I tried takoyaki for the first time while in NYC’s Japantown earlier this year. They were the perfect street food and I hope I’ll have the chance to try them in Japan sometime. Gloria loves takoyaki and they were just as good as she said they’d be.
Takoyaki: chopped octopus in hot savory wheat-flour balls
At Otafuku, a 6 piece order of octopus takoyaki is $5. Otafuku only has 3 items on their menu. Takoyaki, yakisoba, and okonomiyaki. There aren’t even tables in the place. You either stand inside at the “bar”, but only if there aren’t any other patrons inside or sit on the small bench in front of the restaurant to enjoy some yummy Japanese treats.

Remember the Sex and the City episode where Miranda and Carrie have an awkward dinner with their exes Steve and Aidan? Tortilla Flats is in New York’s West Village and I had the chance to stop in for margaritas and chips & salsa/queso/guacamole. I sat outside during the daytime, but from the looks of the place it’s probably really fun at night when they have bingo, trivia nights, and hula hooping! Fun atmosphere, great food & drinks at very reasonable price – what more can you ask for? 🙂
Here’s what Shana Liebman from New York Mag has to say about it:
“Tortilla Flats belongs to that species of cantina where you can scream “whoo-hoo!,” make a lasso out of your Brooks Brothers belt and still find a date. Kitschy Elvis regalia and shiny streamers are tacked around the small one-room restaurant, which is always crowded with post-work young folks looking for a good loud time. On Wednesdays—or hula-hoop contest night—revelers are shoehorned into the space, and every night the bar goes through giant vats of sweet pre-mixed margaritas. Expect to finish several before your surprisingly good food arrives, although the host does guarantee “same day service.”

Planning a visit to the Big Apple? Check out this list of restaurants where Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte sip their Cosmopolitans, run into their exes, and gossip over brunch!
The rumors are true…Magnolia cupcakes are the best. And yes, these are THE cupcakes Carrie and Miranda devoured in Sex and the City! The one pictured above is the chocolate buttermilk cupcake with vanilla icing and sprinkles I had during the Sex and the City tour in NYC. Here are the other flavors they make:
Chocolate Buttermilk Cupcakes or Vanilla Cupcakes – with your choice of chocolate or vanilla icing. (Vanilla icing is available in white or a variety of pastel colors.)
Red Velvet Cupcakes – with our traditional whipped vanilla icing.
Pumpkin Cupcakes – with a maple cream cheese icing and topped with toasted pecans.
Coconut Cupcakes – with a generous amount of meringue icing and topped with coconut.
Hummingbird Cupcakes – with a cream cheese icing and topped with toasted pecans.
German Chocolate – with our coconut-caramel-pecan icing.
Devil’s Food Cupcakes – with your choice of mocha, caramel cream cheese or just good old fashioned cream cheese icing topped with or without coconut.
Plan to wait in line for these gems. It’s a total tourist spot and only kind left were the chocolate and vanilla cupcakes when we got there. Pick up a few and eat them on the park benches nearby and if you want to visit the Sex and the City landmark without taking the tour, this area is the perfect place because the bookstore where Miranda was browsing autobiographies is right across the street!
