I had mini cupcakes from a small storefront in SoHo called Baked by Melissa last time we were visiting NYC. The cupcake craze is everywhere, but this concept was a little different so I thought I’d get in the massive line and try some. I can’t say they tasted that great though. The stuff my friend Krissy bakes is WAY better. Anyhoo, Melissa is making a killing – charging about $1 each for cupcakes the size of a quarter!

I’ve been dying to try Red Velvet ever since it opened this past December in Penn Quarter. I finally got the chance- 2x in one week! The interesting thing about this cupcakery is that the owner is also the art department coordinator for HBO’s “Entourage.”
She is also the sister of Tangy Sweet owner Aaron which explains the neighboring Tangy Sweet storefront. I tried the other Tangy Sweet in Dupont last summer.
There is not much seating in Red Velvet so they encourage you to take your cupcake next door to Tangy Sweet and enjoy it in their spacious modern dining room. I tried the devil’s food (pictured above) – get ready for a chocolate overload, the key west – not as limey as I wanted it to be, and the southern belle – by far the best. The southern belle was moist and the whipped cream frosting went great with the red velvet cake. Each cupcake is $3.25. They’re small, but really, you don’t need much more than that small serving. They are very rich! My friend Cathy broke off bits of cupcake and ate it with spoonfuls of fro-yo. Yummy combo.

The rumors are true…Magnolia cupcakes are the best. And yes, these are THE cupcakes Carrie and Miranda devoured in Sex and the City! The one pictured above is the chocolate buttermilk cupcake with vanilla icing and sprinkles I had during the Sex and the City tour in NYC. Here are the other flavors they make:
Chocolate Buttermilk Cupcakes or Vanilla Cupcakes – with your choice of chocolate or vanilla icing. (Vanilla icing is available in white or a variety of pastel colors.)
Red Velvet Cupcakes – with our traditional whipped vanilla icing.
Pumpkin Cupcakes – with a maple cream cheese icing and topped with toasted pecans.
Coconut Cupcakes – with a generous amount of meringue icing and topped with coconut.
Hummingbird Cupcakes – with a cream cheese icing and topped with toasted pecans.
German Chocolate – with our coconut-caramel-pecan icing.
Devil’s Food Cupcakes – with your choice of mocha, caramel cream cheese or just good old fashioned cream cheese icing topped with or without coconut.
Plan to wait in line for these gems. It’s a total tourist spot and only kind left were the chocolate and vanilla cupcakes when we got there. Pick up a few and eat them on the park benches nearby and if you want to visit the Sex and the City landmark without taking the tour, this area is the perfect place because the bookstore where Miranda was browsing autobiographies is right across the street!

Not the best frozen yogurt DC has to offer, but it’s decent. The opening weekend was miserable because their A/C wasn’t working so hopefully the got that fixed! They do have a pomegranate flavor which is pretty cool but I stuck to the original – just to be safe 🙂

Starbucks tactic to speed up the road to a comeback: fruit smoothies – which were introduced last week. My co-workers and I agree…they suck. Vivannos come in two flavors, banana chocolate and orange mango banana (pictured right). The texture is similar to baby food and the orange mango banana Vivanno is nothing more than a pureed banana. It was a little bitter and was not cold and icee like a smoothie should be. I was kinda rooting for Starbucks on this one, but in my opinion these fruit concoctions are a bust.
