Ray’s Hell Burger | July 13, 2008

With all the hype of this burger joint which opened on July 1st, I was expecting the best beef patty I’ve ever tasted. Eh, not so impressed. I LOVE Michael Landrum’s other restaurant Ray’s the Steaks so I was a little disappointed with less than juicy meat, room temperature bun, and unimaginative toppings. The only redeeming qualities were the watermelon and corn that came with the mediocre 10 oz. burger. We ordered Old Dominion Root Beer to wash it all down but I would have enjoyed it much more in a frosted mug. Others have great things to say about this place, but I think if this place wasn’t owned by DC’s King of Beef it would just be another restaurant.

UPDATE 9/26/08: Gave it another try and I take back all the bad things I said about the burgers here! The buns were toasted and the toppings were fresh. I’m craving a peppercorn crusted burger with piranha sauce right now!

  1. I’m glad I now know not to expect a lot out of this place. You need to try Big Buns off of Fairfax Drive next. It won’t leave you dissapointed…

  2. The burger at Ray’s is 50 times better than Big Buns. The Big Buns burger is too small for the bun and if you thought the toppings at Ray’s are unimaginative, prepare to fall asleep when you read the Big Buns menu.

  3. I agree that Ray’s Hell Burger wasn’t the best burger joint I’ve been to but it surely wasn’t the worst. I’d compare it to Fuddruckers minus the buttery toasted bun.

So by the burgers alone this is how I’d rate Ray’s Hell Burger:

    Fuddruckers > Ray’s > Five Guy’s

    By price:

    Fuddruckers > Five Guy’s > Ray’s

Now after establishing all that, I want to make it clear that I’d still take a Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich over that crap any day.

    …and that’s why I love you.

  5. I request, nay, demand that you revisit this establishment. With a name containing words such as “hell” and “burger”, there must be outstanding groundbeefedness. If, after a second attempt at burger delight, Ray still cannot deliver to your palate, I would be fully disappointed in said restaurant owner.

  6. […] Ray’s the Steaks was previously located on Wilson in Rosslyn in the same shopping center as Ray’s Hell Burger. I stopped by to make a reservation and to check out Michael’s new digs. The owner, Michael […]
